Job Summary:
The Cat Scan Technologist performs computer tomography procedures and related techniques, producing sectional and three-dimensional images for interpretation and assists with interventional and therapeutic procedures.
Essential Generic Job Functions:
- Performs complex CT procedures.
- Uses professional judgment when reviewing and obtaining patient’s clinical history for procedures, ensuring information is documented and scanned into PACS.
- Prepares, screens, and reviews the accuracy of the contrast questionnaire with patient and/or family member and scans into EPIC.
- Identifies and/or administers contrast media related to CT exams as prescribed by a licensed practitioner.
- Reviews the patient prescription to verify appropriateness of exam; if incorrect, communicates with the
- Radiologist and Referring Physician to obtain additional clinical information or a new prescription.
- Calls physicians to clarify prescriptions in accordance with appropriate CT protocols.
- Verifies insurance-authorized exam scripts and sends exam modification forms to Finance for insurance re-verification.
- Obtains outside studies (CD) and schedules them in EPIC so the CD and reports are available in PACS for Radiologist comparison.
- Provides exam copies to patients, requesting physicians, and/or family members.
- Evaluates radiographs using PACS System to ensure proper identification and diagnostic value.
- Uses consistent and appropriate techniques to gather relevant information from the medical record, significant others, and healthcare providers to prepare protocols for scanning and patient safety.
- Determines whether the patient has been appropriately prepared for the procedure.
- Preps patient for scanning (i.e., shielding, immobilization devices).
- Determines appropriate type and dose of contrast to be administered.
- Provides accurate explanations and instructions at any appropriate time and at a level the patient can understand; addresses and documents patient questions and concerns regarding the procedure.
- Performs venipuncture, IV patency, and maintenance procedures according to established guidelines.
- Monitors the patient’s physical condition for any adverse reactions during the procedure.
- Responsible for scheduled shifts including holidays and weekends.
- Works overtime as needed to provide continual quality patient care.
- Performs on-call assignments as needed per Department of Radiology policy.
- Adheres to policies for Employee ID, Standards of Behavior, Attendance, and Punctuality.
- Lifts a minimum of 25 lbs., pushes and pulls a minimum of 50 lbs., and stands a minimum of 6 hours a day.
- Identifies the needs of the patient population served and modifies and delivers care specific to those needs (i.e., age, culture, language, hearing and/or visually impaired, etc.).
- Communicates with patients, parents, and/or primary caregivers at their developmental/age, educational, and literacy level.
- Adheres to the standards identified in the Medical Center’s Organizational Competencies and Standards of Behavior.
Required Skills & Experience:
- Knowledge of anatomy and physiology and radiological positioning of the human body.
- Understanding of mechanical attributes of CT software and hardware.
- Thorough knowledge of PACS system.
- Maintains CEU Credits.
- Achieve ARRT (CT) certification within twelve months following hire date.
- American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification within three months of hire date.
Preferred Skills & Experience:
- Six months CT experience preferred.
- Knowledge of EPIC and any HIS/RIS system used by the hospital.
