Job Summary:
- The Medical Technologist is responsible for performing routine and specialized diagnostic laboratory procedures to ensure high-quality, accurate, and timely test results.
- This role includes responsibilities in specimen processing, instrument operation and maintenance, quality control, phlebotomy, and documentation.
- The technologist collaborates closely with healthcare providers and must always maintain patient confidentiality and professional conduct.
Job Responsibilities:
- Perform and interpret diagnostic laboratory tests in accordance with established policies and procedures.
- Conduct quality control and proficiency testing to ensure accuracy of results.
- Maintain and troubleshoot laboratory instruments; perform preventive maintenance Operate laboratory information systems (Cerner/STAR) for test ordering, receiving, and result reporting.
- Process specimens, verify sample integrity, and prioritize workflow.
- Communicate effectively with physicians, nurses, lab staff, and other departments.
- Assist with CAP inspections, policy manual updates, and implementation of new testing methods.
- Perform phlebotomy and accessioning duties when needed.
- Follow all lab safety, confidentiality, and compliance regulations.
- Participate in continuing education and mandatory training.
- May be required to work weekends, holidays, or be on-call as needed.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology or related field with clinical training (required).
- Certification as MT/MLS by ASCP, NCA, or AMT (required).
- Proficient in laboratory testing, instrumentation, and phlebotomy.
- Familiarity with Cerner/STAR or other LIS systems.
- Strong problem-solving, organizational, and decision-making skills.
- Ability to work in a high-paced, high-traffic lab environment.
- Must be able to lift/move up to 50 lbs and perform physical duties such as standing, bending, and reaching.
- Normal vision (including color perception) and hearing required.
- Exposure to blood, body fluids, and biohazardous materials may occur.
