Job Description

Job Summary:

  • The Surgical Technologist I supports the surgical team during the intraoperative phase of patient care under the direction of a Registered Nurse.
  • The role is responsible for preparing the operating room, maintaining sterile technique, providing surgical instruments and supplies, and ensuring the surgical environment is safe and properly equipped.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Prepare the operating room, instruments, equipment, and supplies according to scheduled procedures.
  • Discuss special surgical requirements with the surgeon and ensure timely preparation before the procedure.
  • Perform aseptic preparation of the operative site, including cleaning and clipping as required.
  • Set up and maintain organized sterile instrument tables.
  • Inspect instruments and trays for completeness and damage and resolve discrepancies promptly.
  • Verify proper functioning of surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies.
  • Perform required counts of sponges, sharps, instruments, and other items.
  • Anticipate the needs of the surgeon and surgical team throughout procedures.
  • Pass sterile instruments and supplies and assist with retractors and other surgical equipment.
  • Assist with patient positioning and surgical draping.
  • Handle surgical specimens according to established protocols and transfer them to the circulating nurse.
  • Assist with application of surgical dressings following procedures.
  • Disassemble and appropriately handle surgical instruments and equipment after procedures.
  • Prepare used instruments for transportation to the decontamination area.
  • Support cleaning, decontamination, sterilization, maintenance, and preparation of instruments and equipment for distribution.
  • Clean the operating room after each procedure and return equipment to designated storage areas.
  • Follow infection control policies, AORN guidelines, OSHA requirements, and other applicable regulatory standards.
  • Maintain knowledge of surgical equipment and instrumentation before patient use.
  • Maintain effective communication and teamwork with the surgical and sterile processing teams.

Required Certifications:

  • BLS – AHA Only.
  • CST – Grandfathered candidates accepted.

Experience Required:

  • Minimum 2 years of Surgical Technologist experience.
  • Experience with: Robotics, Urology, Gynecology, Orthopedics (non-total joints), Spine.
