Job Summary
- The Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) provides advanced respiratory care to patients for the diagnosis, evaluation, treatment, and management of cardiopulmonary conditions.
- Working under physician orders, the RRT delivers high-quality care while ensuring patient safety and adherence to clinical protocols.
- This role also serves as a resource for Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) staff and may take on special clinical projects as assigned by department leadership.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform, interpret, and evaluate diagnostic respiratory procedures in accordance with established protocols.
- Obtain arterial blood gases and ensure accurate analysis.
- Operate, monitor, and troubleshoot respiratory care equipment to ensure optimal performance.
- Initiate and manage respiratory therapy protocols based on patient assessments and department guidelines.
- Administer respiratory medications safely and in a timely manner; monitor and evaluate patient response.
- Continuously assess patient condition and communicate updates effectively with physicians, nurses, and healthcare teams.
- Provide appropriate recommendations to improve patient outcomes.
- Educate patients and families on respiratory conditions, treatment plans, and self-care techniques.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation in accordance with departmental standards.
- Monitor supplies and equipment; report shortages, damages, or malfunctions promptly.
- Utilize time efficiently to meet productivity standards, including during low patient census periods.
- Participate in quality improvement and patient safety initiatives; identify opportunities for process enhancement.
- Identify and address potential safety risks to patients and staff.
- Act as a mentor, consultant, and resource for staff within the department.
- Support professional development and promote best practices in respiratory care.
- Participate in departmental meetings, research activities, and continuous education programs.
- Float to other departments and take on-call duties as required based on operational needs.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
