Job Summary:
- The Radiation Therapy Technologist is responsible for the delivery of ionizing radiation to treat patients in accordance with the Radiation Oncologists prescription and Simulation instructions.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Responsible for the safe and effective execution of the prescribed course of radiotherapy and assessment of images and the performance of diagnostic and interventional procedures.
- Administers radiation treatments to the patients, demonstrating competence in the following aspects of practice.
- Deliver and monitor delivery of treatment.
- Ensure clear and completed documentation.
- Obtain and evaluate portal images, implement corrective measures as necessary.
- Perform calculations.
- Prepare room and equipment.
- Inform and instruct patient regarding equipment and procedures.
- Ensure informed consent.
- Transfer and position the patient.
- Simulates treatment portals per Radiation Oncologist instructions using the conventional and/or CT simulator for the purpose of treatment field localization and verification, demonstrating competencies in the following aspects of practice;
- Document precise and legible information for the setup instructions (i.e. setup aides, treatment distance, field size, treatment depth, gantry/collimator angles).
- Assessment of diagnostic studies for field placement evaluation.
- Prepare for and construct an immobilization device as necessary.
- Placement of marks, tattoos and landmark points for setup purposes.
- Single direct, parallel opposed, multi-field isocenter and extended distance.
- Contour the patient in appropriate plane(s).
- Performs calculations for monitors units following the procedure set up by Medical Physicist.
- Construct and mount individualized shielding blocks.
- Construct lead cut-out as required.
- Prepare and apply individualized bolus.
- Perform and records quality assurance procedures as determined by the department policies for the following;
- Treatment Units.
- Manual Simulator.
- CT Simulator.
- Film Processor.
- Treatment accessories.
- Maintains timely execution of daily treatment appointment schedule in conjunction with patient transportation and patient care floors.
- Maintains a clean, tidy and functional work area.
- Stocks and maintains supplies and laundry in the treatment and simulator rooms.
- Observes equipment for proper operation and reports any malfunctions to the Director of Technical Services, Physicist and/or Radiation Safety Officer.
- Assess and respond to patient’s physical condition and special needs.
- Answers patient/family member’s questions within professional Product regarding treatment and ensures patients receive educational package at the beginning of treatment.
- Maintains orderliness and cleanliness in the Radiation Oncology Department with special attention to patient care rooms.
- Assists in teaching Radiation Therapy to students during their clinical rotation.
- Lifts a minimum of 25 lbs., pushes and pulls a minimum of 25 lbs. and stands a minimum of 4 hours a day.
- Identifies the needs of the patient population served and modifies and delivers care that is specific to those needs (i.e., age, culture, language, hearing and/or visually impaired, etc.).
- This process includes communicating with the patient, parent, and/or primary caregiver(s) at their level (developmental/age, educational, literacy, etc.).
- Adheres to the standards identified in the Client’s Organizational Competencies.
Required Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Graduate of an approved Radiation Therapy Program.
Required Certifications & Licensure:
- Must be registered by the ARRT in Radiation Therapy.
- Must hold a current license as required by the State of New Jersey.
Preferred Skills & Experience:
- 1 to 2 years of experience.
