Job Summary:
- To provide safe care for patients following established standards and practices in accordance with professional and hospital standards.
- Contacts: Constant interaction with internal and external customers to include (but not limited to) patients, families, physicians, employees and visitors.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Assists in the coordination of patient care:
- Assists registered nurse in planning patient care.
- Collaborates with other health team members.
- Participates in performance improvement activities.
- Acts in the role of support during the surgical procedure but not as a surgical assistant during the surgical procedure.
Implements patient care:
- Creates and maintains asepsis.
- Performs scrubbing duties.
- Communicates patient information to the appropriate persons.
- Accounts for all equipment and supplies used in patient care.
Interpersonal skills:
- Communicates with peers, other health team members, patients, visitors.
- Maintains adaptability.
- Supports teamwork within the department and units.
- Resolves problems.
- Consistently meets the department’s Customer Service Quality Standards.
Clinical preceptor:
- Performs clinical preceptor role for scrubbing and follows orientation outline, collaborating with the patient care coordinator, educator/Clinical Nurse Specialist.
Care of environment and equipment:
- Maintains cleanliness in unit.
- Maintains and cleans equipment.
- Held responsible for the equipment use and care in which is used during the surgical case.
- Performs other job duties and responsibilities as required.
Required Education:
High School Diploma/GED and one of the following options:
- Option 1: Completion of an accredited Surgical Technologist educational program.
- Option 2: Completion of an approved Surgical Technology training program through one of the following:
- U.S. Military Training Program (U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, U.S. Air Force, U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Coast Guard).
Required Certifications & Licensure:
- NBSTSA-Certified Surgical Technologist (CST).
- BLS.
Experience:
- Must have strong Neuro Experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of organizational policies and procedures to provide patient care.
- Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment.
- Skill in preparing and maintaining effective working relationships.
- Ability to communicate clearly.

- Other: Ability to organize and prioritize multiple tasks quickly in a fast-paced environment.
- This position has limited access to Medication Rooms.
- Medications should not be handled at any time.
- Any questions should be directed to your supervisor or the charge nurse of the unit in question.
Physical Demands/Work Environment:
- Frequent standing for long periods of time, walking, bending, crouching, stooping.
- Frequent lifting/moving patients.
- Intermittent lifting, moving or carrying up to 50 lbs.
- Frequent pushing or pulling up to 50 lbs.
- Frequent use of finger/hand dexterity.
- Constant reaching with hands/arms and twisting.
- Frequent talking and/or hearing.
- Corrected hearing and vision to normal range.
- Exposure to blood, body fluids or tissue.
- Possible exposure to infectious materials, communicable diseases and/or other conditions common to a healthcare environment.
- Intermittent exposure to risk of exposure to blood-borne pathogens.
- Moderate to high noise level in work area.
- Requires work under stressful conditions, deadlines, or irregular hours.
- May be required to take call and/or work weekends/holidays based on the needs of the department.
