Job Description

Job Summary:

  • To provide safe care for patients following established standards and practices in accordance with professional and hospital standards.
  • Contacts: Constant interaction with internal and external customers to include (but not limited to) patients, families, physicians, employees and visitors.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Assists in the coordination of patient care:

  • Assists registered nurse in planning patient care.
  • Collaborates with other health team members.
  • Participates in performance improvement activities.
  • Acts in the role of support during the surgical procedure but not as a surgical assistant during the surgical procedure.

2. Implements patient care:

  • Creates and maintains asepsis.
  • Performs scrubbing duties.
  • Communicates patient information to the appropriate persons.
  • Accounts for all equipment and supplies used in patient care.

3. Interpersonal skills:

  • Communicates with peers, other health team members, patients, visitors.
  • Maintains adaptability.
  • Supports teamwork within the department and units.
  • Resolves problems.
  • Consistently meets the department’s Customer Service Quality Standards.

4. Clinical preceptor:

  • Performs clinical preceptor role for scrubbing and follows orientation outline, collaborating with the patient care coordinator, educator/Clinical Nurse Specialist.

5. Care of environment and equipment:

  • Maintains cleanliness in unit.
  • Maintains and cleans equipment.
  • Held responsible for the equipment use and care in which is used during the surgical case.
  • Performs other job duties and responsibilities as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of organizational policies and procedures to provide patient care.
  • Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment.
  • Skill in preparing and maintaining effective working relationships.
  • Ability to communicate clearly.
  • Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize multiple tasks quickly in a fast-paced environment.
  • This position has limited access to Medication Rooms.
  • Medications should not be handled at any time.
  • Any questions should be directed to your supervisor or the charge nurse of the unit in question.

Physical Demands/ Work Environment:

  • Frequent standing for long periods of time, walking, bending, crouching, stooping.
  • Frequent lifting/moving patients.
  • Intermittent lifting, moving or carrying up to 50 lbs.
  • Frequent pushing or pulling up to 50 lbs.
  • Frequent use of finger/hand dexterity.
  • Constant reaching with hands/arms and twisting.
  • Frequent talking and/or hearing.
  • Corrected hearing and vision to normal range.
  • Exposure to blood, body fluids or tissue.
  • Possible exposure to infectious materials, communicable diseases and/or other conditions common to a healthcare environment.
  • Intermittent exposure to risk of exposure to bloodborne pathogens.
  • Moderate to high noise level in work area.
  • Requires work under stressful conditions, deadlines, or irregular hours.
  • May be required to take call and/or work weekends/holidays based on the needs of the department.
