Job Description:

  • Examination of cytopathology specimens (gynecological and non-gynecological cytology and fine needle aspiration.

Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Micro Product screening and examination of cytology slides, including gynecological cytology (pap smears), non-gynecological specimens and fine needle aspirations.
  • Refer abnormal slides to the pathologist to finalize diagnosis.
  • Document normal and abnormal results in the Laboratory Information system (LIS).
  • Document daily workload including amount of patient slides, controls and the time spent to complete the workload.
  • Take part in CME activities.
  • Divide and distribute the work in such a manner that the mandated workload limit is not exceeded.
  • Work in the Cytoprep laboratory when necessary to perform accessioning, slide preparation, staining and coverslipping.
  • Provide training and orientation to cytoprep technicians and cytotechnologists.
  • Evaluate quality of staining and document contamination if present.
  • Perform quality control of negative gynecological cases and document results in the laboratory system.
  • Perform proficiency testing annually or as required.
  • Re-screen previous cases from patients with current high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions.
  • Other duties as it relates to Department.

Required Skills:

  • ASCP Certification and 3 years cytotechnology experience preferred.

Required:

  • Current license to practice as a Cytotechnologist in New York State.
  • Bachelor’s degree and training in cytotechnology.
