Job Description
Job Summary:
- The Pharmacy Technician supports pharmacists in the preparation, compounding, repackaging, filling, and delivery of medications in a manner appropriate for patients of all ages (newborn through adult).
- This role includes sterile product preparation, controlled substances management, and inventory maintenance to ensure safe, accurate, and efficient pharmaceutical services.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist pharmacists with preparing and dispensing medications, including sterile products, oral medications, and controlled substances.
- Follow aseptic technique and infection control procedures for sterile compounding; complete annual recertification with ≥90% score.
- Verify patient diagnosis, weight, allergies, and body surface area before medication preparation.
- Accurately enter batch, medication, and prescription orders into the pharmacy system.
- Maintain medication inventory: rotate stock, remove expired/soon-to-expire medications, replenish Omnicell units, and restock OR anesthesia machines.
- Follow non-formulary and stock replacement procedures.
- Label medications with appropriate dilution and expiration dates per department standards.
- Assist in procurement, record keeping, and storage of controlled substances.
- Ensure accuracy of prepared medications as verified by a pharmacist and documented by an absence of dispensing errors.
Experience and Certifications/ License:
- Active Registered Pharmacy Technician license with the Texas State Board of Pharmacy (RPHT-TX) or Pharmacy Intern license (PHAR INT) with TX Board of Pharmacy.
- Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) credential from the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board.
- Previous hospital pharmacy experience, including sterile compounding and Omnicell operations.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of hospital and departmental standards for pharmaceutical handling.
- Strong math, reading, and communication skills.
- Ability to operate sterile product preparation equipment.
