Job Description
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Validates specimen identification and appropriateness of sample type and size and prioritizes workload according to handling protocols defined in section manuals within the established turnaround times.
- Processes specimens using the tissue processor and knows the correct order of solutions and programs for each type of processing.
- Embeds tissues and sections at least 30 blocks/hour on the microtome to the correct thickness; makes the correct number of sections and slides for each specimen or block type.
- No more than one documented complaint from a pathologist related to poor quality.
- Performs routine staining procedures, AFB, MSN, Gram, and Oro, on mounted tissue sections or body fluid preparations for the demonstration of specific tissue elements or microorganisms according to section procedures.
- Prioritizes and multitasks staining procedures to provide more timely, productive processing.
- Coverslips at a minimal rate of client slides/min; labels and distributes slides for interpretation by the pathologist in a timely manner.
- Assists with liver biopsies, fine needle aspirations, and retrieves fresh specimens in the main lab, cryostat lab, NGI suite, CT suite, and Electron Microscopy.
- Performs inquiry functions (technical, specimen number, and result) and troubleshoots problems Routine histology : quality over speed.
Requirements:
- Excellent embedding and cutting skills.
- No less than two years paid experience required, prefer hospital or reference lab experience.
- Would appreciate experience with special stains, frozen sections, and some non-gyn cytology processing.

- Registered Histotechnician HT(ASCP) or Histotechnologist HTL(ASCP).
- Knowledge of hospital and laboratory operations.
- The ability to communicate effectively; exhibit sound independent judgment; basic knowledge of computer functions; working knowledge of basic special stains and paraffin tissue sectioning; ability to operate at a basic level tissue processors, strainers, embedding units, cryostats, microproducts and centrifuges.
