Job Description

Job Summary:

  • The Enteral Feeding Technician is responsible for preparing, storing, and delivering formula, additives and modified human milk for infants and children.
  • Adheres to aseptic technique when producing specialty formula and human milk mixtures for patient consumption and works effectively in an environment with multiple, quickly changing priorities.
  • Adheres to standards of food safety and sanitation, best practices for formula and human milk preparation in a hospital setting, regulatory standards, departmental and hospital policies and procedures in the execution of assigned duties.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Enteral Feeding Production and Human Milk Management:

  • Prepares, portions, delivers patient enteral feeding orders accurately and timely.
  • Knowledgeable about human milk, formulas and additives used in infant, pediatric and adult patients.
  • Practices with a questioning attitude and escalates concerns, issues or discrepancies regarding enteral feeding orders, faulty equipment and unsafe working conditions appropriately.
  • Adheres to standards with regard to storing, thawing, modifying, labeling, delivering and the safe discard of formula and human milk.
  • Checks frozen human milk inventory when needed and updates inventory as applicable to human milk modification.
  • Maintains a clean and sanitary environment.
  • Checks product dates prior to use and rotates using first in first out (FIFO) approach to maintaining inventory/stock on hand.
  • Adheres to applicable regulations, safety and infection prevention & control standards that govern enteral feeding production operations.
  • Competent in the use of specialized equipment for preparation of formula, additives and modified human milk.
  • Maintains records and accurate documentation related to enteral prep processes.

Required Education:

  • Associate’s degree in Nutrition or similar field of study.

Preferred Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nutrition or similar field of study.

Preferred Certifications & Licensure:

  • Dietetic Technician-Registered (DTR) from the Commission On Dietetic Registration (CDR).
  • Serv Safe Certification (SSC) from the American National Standards Institute (ANSI): National Accreditation Board (ANAB).
  • Level 3 Worker – Covid Vaccination Required.

Required Skills & Experience:

  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing to patients, families and members of the healthcare team.
  • Organizational skills as it relates to maintaining product, supplies and maintenance of records.
  • Must be able to read English with understanding and write English legibly.
  • Attention to detail by accurately measuring, mixing and preparing product.
  • Understanding of nutritional content, sources and use of commercial supplements, tube feedings, human milk, infant formulas and feeding modulars (fat, protein, carbohydrate, vitamins and minerals).
  • Ability to perform increasingly complex mathematical calculations such as fractions, percentages, ratios, proportions and metric measures.
  • Computer proficient.

Languages:

  • English (Speak, Read, Write).
