Job Summary:
- The Pathologists’ Assistant will contribute to the overall efficiency of the Pathology Department and laboratory services in a cost-effective manner.
- Responsible for performing a variety of tasks, consisting primarily of gross examination of surgical pathology specimens.
- Supervise the autopsy service and lead the grossing areas of the department.
- Describe and examine surgical specimens and prepare them for histological processing.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist Residents and technical staff with gross dissections.
- Teach Residents and staff grossing techniques and procedures.
- Support supervisory staff in a team effort to complete work efficiently and optimize workflow.
- Manage the day-to-day operations of the morgue to meet patient care needs and regulatory/quality standards.
- Provide expertise and leadership in the autopsy service area.
- Exercise independent judgment and responsibility for technical and administrative decisions for the morgue.
- Assist in autopsy prosections and participate in all aspects of anatomic pathology under a pathologist’s direction.
- Participate in seminars and provide instruction for Residents, medical students, and staff concerning technique and protocols in autopsy and surgical pathology.
- Perform complex surgical resections (pelvic exenterations, Whipple procedures, etc.) and autopsies including grossing, PAD/FAD, and clinical summary.
Experience:
- 2 years as a Pathologists’ Assistant.
- EPIC EMR experience.
Certification:
- Pathologists’ Assistant qualifications per state requirements.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Gross dissection, surgical pathology, autopsies (including complex resections), teaching/training, leadership, administrative oversight.
- Willingness to float as needed.
- Pending state licenses considered.
- Collaboration with pathologists and supervisory team.
