Job Description

Job Summary:

  • Under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse and surgical team members, the Surgical Technologist is responsible for handling surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment required during general surgical procedures.
  • Ensures a clear understanding of the assigned procedure and anticipates the needs of the surgical team.
  • Also provides support related to patient preparation, transport, and assistance with patient care to ensure safety and comfort.
  • Responds to emergent situations according to established procedures.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Scrubs in on general surgical procedures.
  • Prepares the operating room by setting up tables, instruments, and supplies according to the type of surgery.
  • Ensures proper functioning of instruments and equipment prior to use and reports any issues as needed.
  • Follows established departmental policies, procedures, quality assurance programs, and safety, environmental, and infection control standards.
  • Demonstrates cost-consciousness when opening sterile supplies and handling surgical instruments.
  • Responds to emergency situations and notifies appropriate personnel.
  • Delivers necessary supplies to units and ancillary departments.
  • Maintains a clean, safe, and organized environment; stocks rooms and returns equipment to designated areas.
  • Provides comfort and support to pre-operative patients while maintaining privacy and dignity.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient and departmental information.
  • Participates in discussions with leadership regarding job development and career growth.
  • Completes required training and participates in ongoing educational programs.
  • Actively participates in audits and departmental initiatives.
  • Supports administrative and operational changes within the department.
  • May assist in training or precepting new employees.
  • Assists RN with admitting, transferring, and discharging patients from the OR.
  • Assists leadership in managing supply levels efficiently.
  • Engages in continuous learning and professional development.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education:

  • High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent required.

Preferred Education:

  • Graduate of CAAHEP accredited Surgical Technology program preferred.

Required Certification & Licensure:

  • Current BLS certification required or become BLS certified within one month of start date.

Required Skills & Experience:

  • Ability to lift and move patients.
  • Ability to push, pull, and lift case carts, instrument trays, and equipment.
  • Comfortable working in a clinical environment with potential exposure to communicable diseases and other hazards.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.

Preferred Skills & Experience:

  • 1+ year of Surgical Technologist experience.
