Job Description

Job Summary:

  • The Maternal-Fetal Ultrasound Technologist performs specialized ultrasound examinations related to maternal-fetal medicine and assists physicians with diagnostic and invasive procedures.
  • The technologist evaluates patients, performs complex ultrasound examinations, analyzes findings in real time, and ensures appropriate imaging and documentation for physician interpretation.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform specialized maternal-fetal ultrasound examinations under general or direct physician supervision.
  • Perform detailed anatomical evaluations, fetal echocardiograms, growth assessments, biophysical profiles, maternal/fetal Doppler studies, and amniotic fluid assessments.
  • Perform maternal pelvic examinations, including transvaginal cervical assessments.
  • Perform advanced 3D ultrasound examinations and provide imaging guidance for needle-based procedures.
  • Assist physicians with invasive procedures as required.
  • Evaluate patients for contraindications, including medication use, inadequate preparation, or inability/unwillingness to tolerate the procedure.
  • Analyze sonographic findings throughout the examination to ensure complete and diagnostically appropriate imaging.
  • Recognize abnormalities or situations requiring real-time review by the radiologist or supervising physician.
  • Obtain and document appropriate images, Doppler signals, measurements, patient information, and other required examination data.
  • Conduct ultrasonic diagnostic procedures and record anatomical, pathological, and physiological findings for physician interpretation.
  • Communicate examination findings and preliminary information to the radiologist and/or referring OB provider as appropriate.
  • Assist with standardization and training of residents regarding maternal-fetal ultrasound examinations.

Required Education:

  • Completion of a twelve (12) month program in Diagnostic Medical Sonography / General Ultrasound or equivalent certificate program is required.

Required Certifications & Licensure:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider certification.
  • Must be American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) Registered in:
  • OB.
  • OB GYN.

Preferred Certifications & Licensure:

  • Fetal Echocardiography (FE).

Required Skills & Experience:

  • Minimum 3 years of experience performing complex OB/GYN or vascular ultrasound examinations.
  • Strong knowledge of maternal-fetal ultrasound procedures and diagnostic imaging techniques.
  • Ability to perform and analyze complex ultrasound examinations independently while recognizing findings requiring physician review.
