Histology Technician

Job Description

Required Education:

• Associate’s Degree- Science or Histology.

Required Certification:

• HT-ASCP – Cert-Histotechnician or HTL-ASCP – Cert-Histotechnologist – Required.

Experience: 

• Minimum 2 years of paid histology experience; hospital or reference laboratory experience preferred.

Required Technical Skills:

• Specimen identification, validation, accessioning, and prioritization.
• Tissue processing, including knowledge of solution sequence and processing programs.
• Tissue embedding and microtomy/sectioning; ability to embed and cut at least 30 blocks per hour.
• Paraffin tissue sectioning and correct section thickness.
• Routine histology staining and special stains, including AFB, Mucin Stain (MSN), Gram, and Oil Red O (ORO).
• Frozen section and cryostat experience preferred.
• Coverslipping, slide labeling, distribution, and quality control.
• Non-gynecological cytology processing preferred.
• Assisting with liver biopsies, fine needle aspirations, fresh specimen retrieval, and related laboratory procedures.
• Familiarity with tissue processors, stainers, embedding units, cryostats, microtomes, centrifuges, and laboratory computer systems.
• Strong quality focus, troubleshooting skills, communication, independent judgment, and ability to multitask within turnaround-time requirements.
