Job Description
Job Summary:
- Under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse and surgical team members, the Surgical Technologist is responsible for handling surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment required during general surgical procedures.
- Ensures a clear understanding of the assigned procedure and anticipates the needs of the surgical team.
- Also provides support related to patient preparation, transport, and assistance with patient care to ensure safety and comfort.
- Responds to emergent situations according to established procedures.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Scrubs in on general surgical procedures.
- Prepares the operating room by setting up tables, instruments, and supplies according to the type of surgery.
- Ensures proper functioning of instruments and equipment prior to use and reports any issues as needed.
- Follows established departmental policies, procedures, quality assurance programs, and safety, environmental, and infection control standards.
- Demonstrates cost-consciousness when opening sterile supplies and handling surgical instruments.
- Responds to emergency situations and notifies appropriate personnel.
- Delivers necessary supplies to units and ancillary departments.
- Maintains a clean, safe, and organized environment; stocks rooms and returns equipment to designated areas.
- Provides comfort and support to pre-operative patients while maintaining privacy and dignity.
- Maintains confidentiality of patient and departmental information.
- Participates in discussions with leadership regarding job development and career growth.
- Completes required training and participates in ongoing educational programs.
- Actively participates in audits and departmental initiatives.
- Supports administrative and operational changes within the department.
- May assist in training or precepting new employees.
- Assists RN with admitting, transferring, and discharging patients from the OR.
- Assists leadership in managing supply levels efficiently.
- Engages in continuous learning and professional development.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Education:
- High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent required.
Preferred Education:
- Graduate of CAAHEP accredited Surgical Technology program preferred.
Required Certification & Licensure:
- Current BLS certification required or become BLS certified within one month of start date.
Required Skills & Experience:
- Ability to lift and move patients.
- Ability to push, pull, and lift case carts, instrument trays, and equipment.
- Comfortable working in a clinical environment with potential exposure to communicable diseases and other hazards.
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
Preferred Skills & Experience:
- 1+ year of Surgical Technologist experience.
