Job Summary:
- The Registered Respiratory Therapist has advanced knowledge and training of the cardiopulmonary system and is responsible for managing and treating patients.
- Therapists use scientific principles, therapies, and techniques to optimize patient care and outcomes.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Performs and directs respiratory care services, including oxygen therapy, aerosol therapy, inhaled medications, airway clearance, invasive and non-invasive ventilation, and bedside spirometry, as ordered by the attending physician.
- Administers cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in emergency situations.
- Reviews physician orders, analyzes diagnostic test results, and provides appropriate therapy based on the patient’s clinical condition. Implements approved protocols as directed by the physician when appropriate.
- Performs routine and advanced respiratory therapy while prioritizing patient needs in a rapidly changing environment.
- Instructs patients on the proper use of respiratory care equipment and assesses patient response to therapy.
- Coaches patients to improve technique as needed.
- Documents all treatments, therapies, supplies used, and files corresponding charges accurately. Reports outcomes of interventions and makes recommendations when appropriate.
- Adheres to established policies including infection control, isolation protocols, HIPAA, time and attendance, and social media guidelines.
- Works professionally and collaboratively with employees, healthcare professionals, and students.
- Takes responsibility to complete professional and technical requirements set by leadership.
- Incorporates principles of continuous quality improvement in all aspects of clinical care and identifies opportunities for improvement.
Certification/Degree Requirements:
- TX RRT, RCP, BLS (AHA Only).
- ACLS (AHA Only).
- PALS (AHA Only)
Experience:
- 2 Years of minimum experience required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- General understanding of respiratory care modalities, therapies, equipment, and medications.
- Ability to read, write, and follow flow chart protocols as appropriate.
- Ability to work under stressful conditions.
- Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
- General computer skills including typing, information security, electronic medical documentation, handheld scanning, and email.
