Job Description
Job Summary:
- Under general supervision, performs routine tasks relating to the decontamination, processing, sterilization, and distribution of instruments, equipment, and sterile supplies.
- Operates and monitors cleaning and sterilization equipment while maintaining records in compliance with AAMI, AORN, Joint Commission, and OSHA standards.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Collect, sort, clean, disinfect, and inspect instruments, supplies, and durable medical equipment.
- Inspect, assemble, wrap, and label surgical instruments and procedural trays for sterilization and storage.
- Operate, maintain, test, and document the use of sterilizing and cleaning/disinfecting equipment.
- Identify the correct cleaning and sterilization methods for items being processed.
- Maintain accurate records in accordance with departmental policies and procedures.
- Perform and document biological monitoring of all sterilizing equipment.
- Follow protocol for failed biological monitoring results.
- Ensure aseptic techniques are used during handling, preparation, and storage of sterile reusable and disposable supplies.
- Maintain a sanitary, safe, and clean environment in the Sterile Processing Department.
- Deliver processed supplies and equipment to designated hospital departments, as applicable.
- Assist in the Endoscopy reprocessing department, as applicable.
- Participate in training and orientation of new employees.
- Report faulty equipment, safety concerns, and deficiencies to Sterile Processing Leadership.
Required Education:
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
Preferred Education:
- Successful completion of Central Sterile coursework.
Preferred Certifications & Licensure:
- Certification-Sterile Processing.
Required Experience:
- Minimum 2 years of Sterile Processing Technician experience.
Preferred Experience:
- One year of related healthcare experience.
- Successful completion of Central Sterile coursework.
- Sterile Processing certification.
Required Skills:
- Equipment Monitoring, Record Maintenance, Decontamination, Sterilization, Instrument Processing, Basic Computer Skills, Aseptic Techniques.
- Ability to read and write to comprehend equipment operating instructions, IFUs, and complete required documentation.
- Basic arithmetic skills to count instruments.
- Problem-solving and good communication skills.
- English proficiency (Read, Write, Speak).
