Job Summary:
- The Surgical Technologist I supports the inter-operative phase of patient care by assisting the surgical team under the supervision of a Registered Nurse.
- This role is responsible for maintaining a safe, sterile operating room environment and ensuring all surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies are available, functional, and properly handled to support efficient surgical procedures.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Scrub into surgical procedures, prepare instruments, and coordinate with surgeons regarding case-specific needs prior to surgery.
- Prepare and maintain sterile fields, instrument tables, and operating room setups in accordance with surgical schedules and aseptic standards.
- Perform and document surgical counts (sponges, sharps, instruments) per facility policy.
- Anticipate surgeon and surgical team needs during procedures, including passing instruments, handling sterile supplies, and assisting with retractors and positioning.
- Assist with patient preparation, draping, specimen handling, surgical dressings, and post-procedure cleanup.
- Disassemble, transport, and prepare surgical instrumentation for decontamination and sterilization.
- Clean and reset operating rooms between cases while adhering to infection control, AORN, OSHA, and regulatory guidelines.
- Ensure proper knowledge and orientation of all surgical instruments and equipment prior to use.
Education:
- Graduation from a CAAHEP-accredited or nationally accredited surgical technology program preferred.
- Minimum 2 years as a Surgical Technologist.
Certification:
- CST (NBSTSA or NCCT) required.
- BLS: American Heart Association.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Strong knowledge of sterile and aseptic techniques, infection prevention, anatomy, and surgical procedures
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills; ability to work in fast-paced surgical environments.
