Job Description

Job Summary:

  • The Surgical Technologist I functions in the intra-operative phase of patient care to expedite surgical procedures under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse.
  • This position assists the surgical team by ensuring that the operating room environment is safe and that all necessary equipment and instrumentation are available and functioning properly.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Discusses any special needs with the surgeon prior to surgery and prepares instruments and equipment in advance.
  • Prepares the operative site aseptically and assists in draping and positioning the patient.
  • Maintains an organized and sterile instrument table throughout the procedure.
  • Identifies and addresses damaged or incomplete trays immediately to prevent delays or injury.
  • Sets up the operating room according to procedure schedules and verifies all required instruments and supplies.
  • Ensures proper functioning of surgical instruments and equipment.
  • Performs surgical counts (sponges, sharps, instruments) according to policy.
  • Anticipates the needs of the surgical team and provides appropriate instruments and assistance during procedures.
  • Receives and handles surgical specimens following protocol.
  • Assists with placement of dressings post-surgery and disassembles instrumentation for decontamination.
  • Ensures all equipment is cleaned, sterilized, and stored properly following each case.
  • Follows infection control, AORN, and OSHA guidelines to maintain a safe environment for patients and staff.

Education and Certifications:

  • BLS (AHA Only), CST.
  • Successful completion of a CAAHEP-accredited or other nationally accredited surgical technologist program.
  • Completion of a formal training program for surgical technology through the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, or U.S. Public Health Service, or a one-year operating room technician program (preferred).

Experience:

  • Minimum 2 years CVOR experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of infection prevention, aseptic technique, and sterilization standards.
  • Understanding of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and related technologies.
  • Excellent communication, teamwork, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to maintain professionalism and safety in high-pressure OR environments.
  • Occasional exposure to chemical or radiation hazards.
