Job Description
Job Summary:
- The Surgical Technologist functions in the intraoperative phase of patient care, assisting the surgical team in performing procedures safely and efficiently under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse.
- The technologist ensures the operating room is properly prepared, sterile, and equipped with functioning instruments to support optimal patient outcomes.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Discuss special surgical needs with the surgeon before each case and prepare the operating room accordingly.
- Prepare the operative site aseptically and assist with patient clipping as needed.
- Maintain organized and sterile instrument tables, identifying and correcting discrepancies immediately.
- Arrange and prepare sterile supplies and instruments based on procedure requirements.
- Perform surgical counts (sponges, sharps, instruments) per established protocols.
- Anticipate the needs of the surgeon and surgical team throughout each procedure.
- Assist with draping, positioning, and preparation of the patient.
- Handle surgical specimens per hospital protocol and ensure accurate verification.
- Assist in applying surgical dressings following case completion.
- Disassemble and prepare instruments for decontamination and sterilization post-procedure.
- Clean and restock the operating room, ensuring readiness for subsequent cases.
- Follow infection control, AORN, and OSHA standards to maintain a safe and compliant work environment.
Education and Experience:
- Graduation from a CAAHEP-accredited or other nationally accredited Surgical Technologist program (or equivalent military training).
- Minimum of 2 years of recent experience.
- Proficiency in Orthopedic, Neurosurgical, Robotic, and Vascular procedures (experience in all required)
Certifications and License:
- Certified Surgical Technologist (CST).
- Basic Life Support (BLS).
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Strong understanding of infection prevention, aseptic technique, and sterilization standards.
- Knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and related instrumentation.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills with the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment.
