Job Description

Job Summary:

  • The Pharmacy Technician assists the pharmacist in medication preparation, compounding, repackaging, filling, and delivery of medications.
  • The role supports safe and accurate dispensing practices for patients ranging from newborns to adults and assists with controlled substance management in accordance with hospital and departmental standards.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist the pharmacist in the preparation, compounding, repackaging, and dispensing of medications.
  • Support procurement, storage, record-keeping, and distribution of controlled substances.
  • Accurately enter patient information including diagnosis, weight, allergies, and body surface area.
  • Follow aseptic technique and infection control practices for sterile product preparation.
  • Complete annual aseptic technique recertification with a minimum score of 90%
  • Ensure accuracy of medications prepared as verified by the pharmacist.
  • Perform batch, medication, and prescription order entry competently.
  • Maintain adequate inventory of medications and supplies in coordination with Pharmacy Support Services.
  • Apply dilution and expiration dating labels per department standards after pharmacist verification.

Required Certification / Licenses:

  • RPHT-TX – Reg Pharmacy Technician – TX State Board of Pharmacy.
  • Or PHAR INT – Pharmacy Intern State Board of Pharmacy.

Preferred Certification / Licenses:

  • CPHT – Cert-Pharm. TECH Certification Pharmacy Technician Certification Board.
  • Registered pharmacy technician with Texas State Board of Pharmacy.
  • IV sterile compounding preferred, but not required.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • Registered Pharmacy Technician (required).
  • IV sterile compounding certification preferred (not required).
  • Knowledge of hospital and departmental pharmaceutical handling standards.
  • Strong math, reading, and communication skills.
  • Ability to operate equipment used in sterile product preparation.
