Job Description

Job Summary:

  • The Registered Respiratory Therapist has advanced knowledge and training in the cardiopulmonary system and is responsible for managing and treating patients.
  • Therapists use scientific principles, therapies, and techniques to optimize patient care and outcomes.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performs and directs respiratory care services including oxygen therapy, aerosol therapy, inhaled medications, airway clearance, invasive and non-invasive ventilation, and bedside spirometry as ordered by the attending physician.
  • Administers cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in emergency situations.
  • Reviews physician orders, analyzes diagnostic results, and provides appropriate therapy based on the patient’s clinical condition.
  • Implements approved protocols as directed by the physician when appropriate.
  • Performs routine and advanced respiratory therapy while prioritizing patient needs in a fast-paced environment.
  • Educates patients on the proper use of respiratory equipment and assesses response to therapy, coaching for improved technique when needed.
  • Documents all treatments, therapies, and supplies used, and files charges accurately.
  • Reports outcomes and provides recommendations as appropriate.
  • Adheres to established policies including infection control, isolation, HIPAA, time and attendance, and social media guidelines.
  • Works collaboratively and professionally with healthcare staff and students.
  • Takes initiative to meet professional and technical requirements set by leadership.
  • Incorporates continuous quality improvement principles into clinical practice and identifies improvement opportunities.

Certification/Degree Requirements: 

  • BLS (AHA Only), RRT, TMB.

Experience:

  • 1 year of minimum experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong understanding of respiratory care modalities, therapies, equipment, and medications.
  • Ability to read, write, and follow flow chart protocols.
  • Ability to work under stressful conditions.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • General computer skills including typing, information security, electronic medical documentation, handheld scanning, and email.
