Job Description

Duties:

  • Validates specimen identification per hospital and departmental policies and procedures and appropriateness of sample type and size; processes according to specimen handling protocols defined in standard operating procedures.
  • Organizes workload to ensure to prioritize specimen samples using first-in-first out so that patient results are released within 60 minutes from time of receipt. Manages workload to accommodate special priorities such as Laboratory Triage System (LTS) samples and OR STAT samples.
  • Performs routine and special test procedures accurately according to the policies & procedures, recognizing and troubleshooting questionable orders and results, delta checking and repeating tests when necessary as; document corrective actions in the LIS.
  • Provides age appropriate care by following established technical protocols based on age of patient, using appropriate instrumentation, and reporting and interpreting results based on normal ranges.
  • Reports all critical results as soon as possible to the appropriate person according to laboratory and hospital policy and documents information in LIS.
  • Assists other employees in troubleshooting specimen problems and errors and performance of work load in order to meet established turn around times
  • Cooperates with others positively to facilitate the analysis of patient results and clearly communicates problems or potential problems to the supervisor or in-charge technologist.
  • Follows standard work per job guidance sheets and walk patterns to improve timeliness and quality of laboratory testing.

Required:

  • Determines suitability of specimens and orders by verifying patient demographic information, receipt documentation, and recognizing and troubleshooting erroneous, inconsistent, and special orders

Skills:

  • Knowledge of hospital laboratory operations.
  • Ability to operate a PC and use multi-constituent clinical laboratory analyzers, microProducts, spectrophotometers, centrifuges, and other laboratory equipment.
