Job Summary:
- The Surgical Technologist is responsible for ensuring a safe environment for patients by adhering to professional and hospital standards.
- This role requires constant interaction with internal and external stakeholders, including patients, families, physicians, employees, and visitors.
Responsibilities:
- Assist in coordinating patient care by supporting registered nurses and collaborating with healthcare teams.
- Maintain asepsis and perform scrubbing duties during surgical procedures.
- Communicate patient information effectively to relevant personnel.
- Ensure proper accounting and handling of all surgical equipment and supplies.
- Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills by fostering teamwork and resolving issues.
- Act as a clinical preceptor, mentoring new staff and following orientation protocols.
- Maintain a clean surgical environment and ensure proper equipment care.
- Adhere to all hospital policies regarding medication access and safety.
Education and Experience:
- High school graduate or GED equivalency – Required.
- Graduate of an accredited surgical technology program or completion of military surgical training.
- At least 1 year of clinical operating room experience – Highly desired.
Required Certification:
- NBSTSA or NCCT.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification from the American Heart Association – Required.
Must meet one of the following qualifications to practice surgical technology:
- Completion of military surgical technology training.
- Employment as a surgical technologist in a healthcare facility before January 1, 2008.
- Federal government service in a surgical technology role.
Physical Requirements:
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, and lifting/moving patients.
- Intermittent lifting, moving, or carrying up to 50 lbs.
Work Environment:
- Exposure to blood, body fluids, infectious materials, and communicable diseases.
- Moderate to high noise levels in the work area.
- Requires working under stressful conditions, deadlines, or irregular hours.
- May involve weekend, holiday, and on-call work based on department needs.
