Job Description
Job Summary:
- Provides safe and effective patient care during surgical procedures in accordance with professional and hospital standards.
- Supports the surgical team by performing scrubbing duties, maintaining aseptic technique, preparing and maintaining equipment, and ensuring all supplies are properly accounted for.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist the Registered Nurse with patient care planning and coordination.
- Collaborate with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare team members.
- Perform surgical scrubbing duties and maintain aseptic technique.
- Support the surgical team during procedures but does not function as a surgical assistant.
- Communicate patient information appropriately to the healthcare team.
- Account for all equipment and supplies used during surgical procedures.
- Maintain and clean surgical equipment and the surrounding environment.
- Ensure proper care and handling of equipment used during procedures.
- Support teamwork and maintain effective communication with patients, visitors, and staff.
- Participate in performance improvement activities.
- Serve as a clinical preceptor for surgical scrubbing when assigned.
- Organize and prioritize multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
- Follow all hospital safety policies, procedures, and standards.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Education:
- High School Diploma/GED and one of the following options:
- Completion of an accredited Surgical Technologist educational program
- Completion of an approved Surgical Technology training program through one of the following:
- U.S. Military Training Program (U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, U.S. Air Force, U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Coast Guard)
Required Certifications & Licensure:
- NBSTSA-Certified Surgical Technologist (CST).
- BLS .
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of hospital policies and procedures related to patient care.
- Knowledge of safety practices and infection prevention.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively with patients, physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals.
- Ability to multitask and prioritize effectively in a fast-paced surgical environment.
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships and contribute to a team-oriented environment.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements:
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, crouching, and stooping.
- Frequent lifting and moving of patients.
- Ability to lift, move, or carry up to 50 lbs.
- Frequent pushing or pulling of up to 50 lbs.
- Frequent use of hand and finger dexterity.
- Frequent reaching and twisting.
- Exposure to blood, body fluids, tissue, and infectious materials.
- Ability to work under stressful conditions, deadlines, and irregular hours.
- May be required to work weekends and holidays based on department needs.
- May be required to take call; however, this position currently has no on-call requirement.
- Medications must not be handled.
- Questions regarding medications should be directed to the supervisor or charge nurse.
