Job Description

Job Summary:

• The Medical Technologist / Medical Laboratory Scientist performs routine and specialized diagnostic laboratory procedures requiring technical expertise, sound judgment, and independent decision-making. The role performs laboratory testing, quality control, phlebotomy, specimen processing, and related duties while supporting accurate and timely patient results.
• The technologist may also assist the Laboratory Supervisor with technical and administrative functions and must maintain strict confidentiality of all work-related and patient information.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Perform routine and specialized laboratory testing according to established standards, policies, and procedures.
• Perform phlebotomy and specimen accessioning duties as needed.
• Verify specimen integrity and ensure accurate patient identification.
• Evaluate laboratory data, establish testing priorities, interpret results, and take appropriate action according to policy.
• Perform quality control and proficiency testing to ensure accurate, timely, and reliable results.
• Assist with evaluation and implementation of new laboratory methods.
• Maintain laboratory policies, procedures, and documentation as required.
• Prepare for and support regulatory and accreditation inspections, including CAP requirements.
• Operate laboratory instrumentation and perform instrument quality control.
• Perform preventive maintenance and troubleshoot instrument issues.
• Document maintenance, QC results, testing activities, and corrective actions appropriately.
• Utilize laboratory information systems, including Cerner/STAR, for ordering, receiving, canceling, reviewing, and verifying tests.
• Review pending worklists and follow up on outstanding tests.
• Communicate laboratory information accurately and professionally with supervisors, pathologists, physicians, nurses, patients, and other healthcare professionals.
• Answer laboratory calls and provide appropriate information or direction.
• Follow laboratory and hospital policies, safety procedures, and applicable regulatory requirements.
• Maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
• Complete required education and participate in continuing education and performance improvement initiatives.
• Work efficiently and utilize laboratory resources appropriately to minimize waste.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education, Experience and Certifications/ Licenses:

• ASCP, ASCPi, NCA, or AMT certification/registration as MT, MLS, or IMLS required.
• Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology or a bachelor’s degree with required prerequisite coursework and clinical training.
• Candidates without a bachelor’s degree may qualify through an approved alternate education and training route recognized by ASCP, NCA, or AMT.
• Previous work experience is not required.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements:

• Frequent standing, walking, sitting, bending, and stooping.
• May require lifting or moving items weighing up to 50 lbs.
• Frequent use of hands, fingers, and eye-hand coordination.
• Frequent reaching with hands and arms.
• Visual acuity and normal color perception required for laboratory work and interpretation of orders.
• Exposure to blood, body fluids, tissue, infectious materials, toxic substances, and biohazardous materials.
• Fast-paced, high-traffic laboratory environment that may be stressful and interruptive.
• May be required to work weekends, holidays, or take call based on departmental needs.
