Job Description

Job Summary:

  • The Histology Technologist performs routine and specialized histology procedures requiring technical knowledge, sound judgment, and independent decision-making.
  • The role is responsible for specimen processing, quality control, instrumentation, documentation, and maintaining compliance with laboratory standards and procedures.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform routine and specialized histology procedures according to established policies and procedures.
  • Verify specimen integrity and ensure accurate patient identification.
  • Perform testing procedures and quality control activities.
  • Operate histology laboratory instruments and equipment.
  • Perform instrument QC, document results, and take appropriate corrective action when needed.
  • Complete preventive maintenance and troubleshoot instrument issues.
  • Maintain an understanding of instrument operation and mechanical functions.
  • Use laboratory and hospital computer systems for ordering, receiving, canceling, and verifying tests.
  • Review pending worklists and follow up on outstanding tests.
  • Accurately document testing, quality control, preventive maintenance, and other required activities.
  • Maintain strict patient confidentiality.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with supervisors, pathologists, laboratory staff, physicians, nurses, patients, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Respond to laboratory inquiries and provide appropriate information or direction.
  • Follow all laboratory and hospital safety policies and procedures.
  • Maintain a safe work environment and report safety concerns appropriately.
  • Complete required education and participate in continuing education programs.
  • Support departmental quality and performance improvement initiatives.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education & Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum 1 year of laboratory work experience.
  • No licensure or certification required.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of histology laboratory procedures and instrumentation.
  • Ability to operate laboratory equipment and troubleshoot technical issues.
  • Strong organizational and workflow management skills.
  • Ability to make sound decisions under time constraints.
  • Clear verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with patients, healthcare professionals, and laboratory staff.
  • Proficiency with computers and standard office equipment.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements:

  • Frequent standing, walking, sitting, bending, and stooping.
  • May occasionally lift or move items weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Frequent use of hands, fingers, and eye-hand coordination.
  • Frequent reaching with hands and arms.
  • Ability to read and comprehend laboratory information and orders.
  • Normal color perception and visual acuity required.
  • Exposure to blood, body fluids, tissue, and potentially infectious materials.
  • Ability to work in a laboratory healthcare environment under stressful or irregular conditions.
  • May be required to work weekends, holidays, or take call based on departmental needs.
