Job Summary:
- Under general direction, performs routine and advanced professional and technical work for the client Histology Laboratory.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Receives tissue specimens from clinical services and autopsy suite, determines if specimens are labeled as to type of specimens and assigns surgical pathology or autopsy accession number to specimens.
- Places specimens in proper fixation material.
- Assists the pathologist in gross dissection of tissue and submission of tissue for histology examination and checks for proper accession number.
- Process sections taken for microscopic examination through multiple phases required for preservation and fixation.
- Embeds and sections tissue and mounts on slides for examination.
- Performs all routine and special staining techniques of histology sections as well as immunohistochemistry and advanced techniques.
- Participates in quality assurance and statistical data gathering.
Required Education:
- Associates degree in Histology or Natural Sciences.
Required Certifications & Licensure:
- MLT, MT, HTL or HT Certified by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists.
Required Skills & Experience:
- Knowledge of the process of all aspects of the histology lab, including tissue processing, microtomy, special staining procedures and immunohistochemistry used for tissue differentiation and diagnosis.
- Ability to work with precision and care to ensure accuracy and efficiency under periods of pressure and stress.
- Ability to establish rigid controls to ensure all specimens are properly identified as to source and type.
- Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills.
- Proficient with the use of Microsoft Office tools.
Preferred Skills & Experience:
- 1 or more years of related work experience.
