Job Description
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Disassemble, clean, and disinfect instruments and equipment using proper manual and mechanical processes.
- Operate decontamination equipment such as sonic washers, cart washers, washer sterilizers, and decontaminators.
- Perform assigned cleaning tasks in the work area.
- Use universal precautions (gloves, face shields, protective gowns) in decontamination areas.
- Retrieve reusable instruments and equipment from throughout the facility and transport to Sterile Processing.
- Unload instruments from washer sterilizers and distribute to assigned workstations.
- Assemble instrument trays and packs per written instructions and protocols.
- Check instruments for sharpness and proper functionality.
- Identify and memorize a wide variety of instruments.
- Apply sterilization wrappers and use heat sealers as needed.
- Ensure correct labeling of all packaged items.
- Load sterilizer carriages and transport trays to sterilization areas.
- Verify trays, packs, and basins are processed following correct procedures.
- Operate all sterilizer types and select appropriate cycle/time based on load.
- Understand sterilization methods including Sterrad and steam.
- Accurately document sterilization information manually or via computer.
- Perform biological monitoring per departmental policy.
- Handle sterile instruments and supplies correctly and restock sterile storage using proper rotation.
- Monitor all equipment to ensure proper functioning.
- Pull surgical supplies using preference cards.
- Maintain labeled locations for instruments and supplies for efficiency.
- Perform quality control checks before items leave the department.
- Restock, store, or return procedural carts as required.
- Fulfill requests from OR, Pre-op, and PACU.
- Assist with training new staff.
- Respond to emergency codes as needed.
- Follow departmental guidelines regarding sterility.
- Attend in-services and required meetings.
- Maintain knowledge of all Sterile Processing Department areas.
Requirements:
Required Education:
- Must have high school diploma or GED.
Experience:
- Minimum 2 years of Central Service experience.
Certification:
- Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST).
Skills:
- Knowledge of sterilization processes, instrument handling, and decontamination protocols.
