Job Summary:
- The Nuclear Medicine Technologist is responsible for the ordering, preparation, and administration of radiopharmaceutical materials to patients.
- The Nuclear Medicine Technologist operates gamma equipment or thyroid uptake and probe for the visualization for both the structure and function of major organ systems within the body.
- The Nuclear Medicine Technologist utilizes knowledge of radiation physics and safety in the preparation, measurement, and administration of isotopes.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Participates in all Radiology Management Systems functions as they relate to patient procedures.
- Demonstrates adequate radiation safety practices as it relates to patients and co-workers.
- Maintain and be familiar with required documentation necessary for licensing agencies.
- Provide patient education as needed.
- Demonstrates knowledge on the proper handling and disposing of radioactive waste material.
- Develops effective communication with referring physicians, radiologists and other department customers to ensure the delivery of nuclear medicine procedures.
- Performs a broad range of diagnostic imaging procedures including SPECT and SPECT/CT.
- Prepares image data for interpretation including proper documentation and labeling, image data processing and formatting, data calculations and SPECT reconstruction.
- Practices within Federal and State guideline.
- Orders, receives, documents, stores and returns radiopharmaceuticals in accordance with NY DOH.
- Prepares, documents, dispenses and administers radiopharmaceuticals in accordance with NY DOH.
- Transfers and retrieves image data to PACS and documents the study in EPIC.
- Performs radioactive waste collection/disposal.
- Performs and documents daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly quality control procedures on equipment in accordance with client.
- Reports deviations to appropriate personnel.
- Demonstrates proficiency in starting intravenous catheter line and injecting radioisotopes.
- Removes IVs.
- Adheres to appropriate and accepted clinical principles, methods and procedures while performing nuclear medicine procedures.
- Demonstrates and is able to communicate to staff awareness of and compliance with job duties and responsibilities related to hospital safety, infection control policies, fire and disaster plans in a timely manner, including body mechanics education as it applies to the work setting.
- Maintains confidentiality of patients and hospital information.
- Complies with all hospital policies and procedures pertaining to incident reporting.
- Performs other duties as required and assigned.
Required Education:
- Associate’s degree in applied science in Nuclear Medicine.
Preferred Education:
- Bachelor of Science degree in Nuclear Medicine.
Required Certifications & Licensure:
- NYS Radiologic Technologist license in Nuclear Medicine.
- NMTCB or ARRT(N).
- BLS Certification (AHA, HSI, or client).
