Job Description:
- Examination of cytopathology specimens (gynecological and non-gynecological cytology and fine needle aspiration.
Roles & Responsibilities:
- Micro Product screening and examination of cytology slides, including gynecological cytology (pap smears), non-gynecological specimens and fine needle aspirations.
- Refer abnormal slides to the pathologist to finalize diagnosis.
- Document normal and abnormal results in the Laboratory Information system (LIS).
- Document daily workload including amount of patient slides, controls and the time spent to complete the workload.
- Take part in CME activities.
- Divide and distribute the work in such a manner that the mandated workload limit is not exceeded.
- Work in the Cytoprep laboratory when necessary to perform accessioning, slide preparation, staining and coverslipping.
- Provide training and orientation to cytoprep technicians and cytotechnologists.
- Evaluate quality of staining and document contamination if present.
- Perform quality control of negative gynecological cases and document results in the laboratory system.
- Perform proficiency testing annually or as required.
- Re-screen previous cases from patients with current high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions.
- Other duties as it relates to Department.
Required Skills:
- ASCP Certification and 3 years cytotechnology experience preferred.
Required:
- Current license to practice as a Cytotechnologist in New York State.
- Bachelor’s degree and training in cytotechnology.
