JOB SUMMARY:

• Under the leadership of the Laboratory Director, the Department Manager, and Laboratory Administration personnel will assist in the supervision of technical operations in the Blood Bank.
• Integrate and coordinate the functions and services to an optimal level of testing performance to meet the necessary delivery of laboratory data to physicians and health care providers.
• Within the role of senior technologist, assures compliance with regulatory agencies e.g. American Association of Blood Bankers.

REQUISITE & PREFERRED SKILLS:

• 1. Bachelor of Science or equivalent combination of education and related experience. 2. Certification in: NYS Department of Education Clinical Laboratory Technologist License

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Overall role of Lead Technologist within the Blood Bank in the performance of blood services, which included the testing component of type and screen with crossmatch and other related blood bank techniques and procedures.
• Assign workload to personnel in the laboratory in the corresponding section of the Blood Bank in order to obtain maximum productivity.
• Assist technologists and technicians with more difficult and complex laboratory tests and analytes of test results and result interpretation.
• Train technical staff relative to instrumentation and understanding of the concept of the test procedure being performed.
• Assure proper functioning of equipment and its performance.
• Maintain quality checks on results and document all statistical data.
• Develops, implements, and supervises quality control for each test performed to ensure accuracy and precise patient test results, and establishes quality assurance protocols for all test procedures.
• Responsible for maintaining a working inventory of reagents and consumables and ensuring the proper function of equipment.
• Monitor all refrigerator, freezer, and incubator temperature charts for limits of acceptable range and document accordingly.
• Equipment maintenance logs and quality control records, including review of proficiency surveys, and document corrective action when applicable.
• Participate in monthly quality assurance meetings and prepare quarterly performance monitors.
• Establish work schedules and assignment of personnel with the appropriate supervisors relative to Tour I, Tour II, and Tour III.
• Maintain expertise in Blood Bank automated and manual techniques, including updating policies and procedures, and in-service staff accordingly.
• Verify and sign completed Blood Bank work and check for accuracy and validity.
• Responsible for interaction with clinical services during tour of duty, including implementation of massive transfusion protocol and internal or external disaster occurrences in the absence of the Associate Director.
• Monitoring transfusion procedures that occur as they relate to inpatient, emergency medicine, ambulatory care, and perioperative services.

Skills:

• 1 year Clinical Laboratory Technologist experience in Blood Bank.
