Job Description

Job Summary:

• The Surgical Technologist I is responsible for preparing, handling, and maintaining surgical instruments and sterile supplies while assisting the surgical team during operative procedures.
• The role ensures proper instrument handling, specimen management, sterile technique, and patient safety throughout the surgical process.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Prepare and standardize surgical setups using surgeon preference cards.
• Organize, handle, and care for surgical instruments before returning them for decontamination.
• Return clean instruments and supplies to designated storage areas.
• Maintain counts of sponges, needles, and instruments according to policy.
• Prepare, label, and handle medications in accordance with established procedures.
• Handle surgical specimens according to operating room policies and procedures.
• Control contamination through decontamination, disinfection, sterilization, and sanitation of instruments and equipment.
• Remove used equipment and properly dispose of contaminated needles and syringes after procedures.
• Participate in team conferences to plan and evaluate patient care.
• Assist the circulator in revising the patient care plan as needed.
• Maintain Surgical Technologist skills proficiency checklist and complete specialty rotations as assigned.
• Lift up to 50 lbs, push/pull up to 400 lbs, and stand for the duration of the shift.
• Deliver patient care appropriate to the patient’s age, culture, language, hearing, visual, and developmental needs.
• Adhere to client organizational competencies and operating room policies.

Required Education:

• Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technologist Program or appropriate training program.

Preferred Certifications & Licensure:

• Professional certification by the AST.

Required Skills & Experience:

• Surgical Technology, Neuro Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Orthopedic Trauma Surgery, Spine Surgery, Level 1 Trauma Center Experience.
• Experience scrubbing surgical procedures in the operating room.

Preferred Experience:

• Level 1 Trauma Center experience.
• Experience in Vascular Surgery.
• Experience in Orthopedic Trauma Surgery.
• Experience in Spine Surgery.
• Experience in Neuro Surgery.
• Experience in Endovascular Surgery.
