Job Description
Job Summary:
- Performs various duties as a member of the surgical team to ensure a safe and successful operative procedure.
- This position functions under the supervision of a Registered Nurse and directly reports to Surgical Services management.
- It is expected that Surgery Tech will support system wide and surgical operations initiatives and practices.
- In addition, this person will actively participate in the surgical operations safety plan as outlined.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Maintains accountability for ensuring the operating room and all surgical items meet sterilization criteria.
- Maintains the sterile field and ensures a safe environment.
- Recognizes and addresses sharps and fire safety processes.
- Prepares the operating room and instruments for the surgical procedure.
- May assist with sterile processing.
- Assists the surgeon(s) during the procedure while staying within the ORT Product of practice.
- Can identify emergency situations and exercises judgement when implementing procedures to respond to emergencies.
- Assists with room turnover, cleaning, and preparation for the next procedure upon completion of the procedure.
- Performs scrub duties and maintains sterile supplies and sterile technique.
- Assists in nursing care and preparation of surgical patients.
- Assembles, organizes and completes case carts according to doctor’s preference lists.
- Provides appropriate instrumentation, suture and all supplies as requested and provides and maintains a sterile environment.
- May assist surgeon by passing instruments to surgeon during cases.
- Counts sponges, needles, blades and instruments using proper technique and established policy.
- Assists in maintenance and care of specimens and prepares for laboratory analysis.
- Handles specimens, implants, dressings, soiled instruments, contaminated materials and sharps in accordance with established policy and recommended standards of practice.
- Assists with timely turnover of rooms, including clean up, replacement and restocking of supplies and equipment.
- Cares for instruments and equipment.
- Promotes mission, vision, and values of Client Health, and abides by service behavior standards.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- May be required to float to other departments (within Product of competency and qualifications) based on business need.
- May be required to be placed on-call during a regularly scheduled shift.
Required Education:
- High School Diploma or GED is required.
- Graduation from formal, accredited surgical technologist program is required.
- Training in the US military may substitute for the completion of the formal surgical technologist training.
Required Certifications & Licensure:
- BLS – American Heart Association.
Required Skills & Experience:
- Demonstrates the ability to maintain a sterile field and ensure environmental safety.

- Demonstrates knowledge of surgical services.
- Demonstrates knowledge of sterile processing.
- Demonstrates the ability to respond appropriately in emergency situations.
- Has experience in surgeries support within the surgical team.
- Has experience in life support situations related to surgical care.
- Has experience in sterile field management.
- Has experience in sterilization processes and requirements.
- Has experience in supervision within surgical services (within ORT Product).
Preferred Skills & Experience:
- One (1) yr. OR scrubbing experience is preferred.
- One (1) yr. clinical experience in an accredited hospital is preferred.
