Job Description

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform initial-response screening following protocols approved by the supervising provider.
  • Escort patients to exam rooms and prepare them for examinations, procedures, and treatments.
  • Obtain and record vital signs and patient history in the electronic health record (EHR).
  • Prepare for, set up, and assist with examinations, procedures, and treatments per established protocols, policies, and procedures.
  • Prepare, administer, and document oral and parenteral medications and immunizations as ordered, following the six rights of medication administration.
  • Document all care provided during patient visits in the EHR.
  • Recognize and appropriately respond to medical emergencies.
  • Monitor and respond to patient requests via telephone encounters, In-Basket messages, and/or MyChart within designated timeframes.
  • Enter medication, radiology, lab orders, referrals, and refill requests for provider sign-off.
  • Discharge patients and provide after-visit instructions as directed by the provider.
  • Collect and process specimens; perform CLIA-waived tests.
  • Perform electrocardiograms, respiratory testing, phlebotomy (venipuncture and capillary puncture), and other testing as needed.
  • Serve as a liaison between patients and medical staff regarding concerns or complaints.
  • Schedule, coordinate, and monitor appointments and outpatient procedures.
  • Apply third-party and managed care policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Obtain insurance pre-authorizations.
  • Participate in departmental Quality Assessment and Quality Improvement programs.
  • Maintain standard precautions, including infection control and biohazard disposal.
  • Apply aseptic and sterile techniques.
  • Clean and maintain instruments, equipment, and exam rooms; manage inventory of supplies.
  • Comply with all client, departmental, safety, and regulatory standards.
  • Function as a healthcare advocate and educate patients on office policies, procedures, health maintenance, disease prevention, and treatment compliance.
  • Identify and provide community resources to meet patient needs.
  • Uphold the mission, vision, values, goals, policies, and procedures of the Client.
  • Maintain required competencies and perform other duties as assigned within Product of practice.

Required Education:

  • Graduate of a Medical Assistant program with a formal clinical externship (minimum 160 hours).
  • Graduate of a Medical Assistant program without externship and at least one (1) year of clinical MA experience within the past five (5) years.
  • Current professionally recognized Medical Assistant certification with at least five (5) years of clinical MA experience.
  • Licensed Paramedic or Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) with at least one (1) year of clinical experience within the past five (5) years.
  • Military-trained medical personnel with at least one (1) year of clinical experience within the past five (5) years.

Required Certifications & Licensure:

  • Current BLS-C (American Heart Association).

Preferred Certifications & Licensure:

  • CMA (AAMA).
  • RMA (AMT).
  • CCMA (NHA).
  • NCMA (NCCT).

Preferred Skills & Experience:

  • Basic computer and keyboarding skills.
  • Ability to perform a wide range of clinical skills in an ambulatory setting.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills.
  • EPIC (Electronic Medical Record) experience preferred.
