Job Summary:
- Under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse and surgical team members, the Surgical Technologist is responsible for handling surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment during general surgical procedures.
- This role requires knowledge of assigned procedures, anticipation of surgical team needs, and support of patient safety, comfort, and care.
- The Surgical Technologist responds to emergent situations according to established procedures.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Scrub on general surgical procedures.
- Prepare the operating room by setting up tables, instruments, and supplies based on procedure type.
- Ensure proper functioning of instruments and equipment prior to use; report needed repairs.
- Follow departmental policies, quality assurance programs, safety, environmental, and infection control standards.
- Demonstrate cost-conscious handling and opening of sterile supplies.
- Respond to emergent situations and notify appropriate personnel.
- Deliver supplies to units and ancillary departments as needed.
- Maintain a safe, clean, and organized operating room environment.
- Clean, stock, and return equipment and supplies to designated storage areas.
- Provide comfort and support to pre-operative patients while respecting privacy.
- Maintain confidentiality of patient and departmental information.
- Assist the RN with admitting, transferring, and discharging patients from the OR.
- Support leadership with supply par-level adjustments.
- Participate in audits, task forces, continuing education, and department-specific training.
- Support administrative and departmental governance changes.
- Train and precept new Surgical Technologist staff as assigned.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Education:
- High school diploma or GED.
Preferred Education:
- Graduate of a CAAHEP-accredited Surgical Technology program
Certification & Licensure:
- Current BLS certification required (or must obtain within one month of start date).
- CST certification not required.
Required Skills & Experience:
- 1–2 years of Surgical Technologist experience.
- Experience with joint procedures and/or robotic surgery.
- Ability to lift and move patients.
- Ability to push, pull, and lift case carts, instrument trays, and equipment.
- Ability to work in a patient-care environment with potential exposure to communicable diseases and hazardous materials.
- Ability to stand and walk for prolonged periods.
Preferred Skills & Experience:
- One year or more of Surgical Technologist experience.
