Clinical Technician, Dialysis

Job Description

Job Summary:

• Under the supervision of nursing staff, provides direct care and monitoring of patients undergoing hemodialysis.
• Communicates patient status to appropriate team members and works as part of an interdisciplinary care team.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Monitor patients during dialysis and report changes promptly.
• Provide direct patient care under nursing supervision.
• Respond to emergencies as needed.
• Reinforce patient education.
• Document care and observations (e.g., flow sheets, incident reports).
• Follow unit-specific operational procedures (e.g., schedules, breaks).
• Maintain respectful, professional interactions with patients and families.
• Communicate with internal departments and external agencies.
• Follow infection control policies and safety procedures.
• Assist in minimizing waste within the unit.
• Support dialysis treatment adjustments within Product of practice.
• Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
• Perform technical tasks (e.g., cannulation, machine setup, disinfection).
• Carry out physician orders within role limits.
• Assist with blood draws and dialysis-related procedures.

Under Medical Director delegation and nursing supervision:

• Administer normal saline via extracorporeal system.
• Administer 2% xylocaine (if ordered) at initiation of dialysis.
• Administer prescribed anticoagulants (e.g., heparin, saline).
• Instill anticoagulants into catheter ports post-treatment as ordered.
• Participate in on-call duties if required.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.

Education & Experience:

• High School Diploma (required); Associate’s Degree in Science (preferred).
• Dialysis experience preferred.
• Dialysis Technician Certification required (within 18 months if newly hired).
