Job Description

Job Summary:

  • Under the supervision of the nursing staff, the Certified Clinical Hemodialysis Technician (CCHT) is responsible for monitoring and providing direct care to patients undergoing hemodialysis.
  • The technician works as part of an interdisciplinary team to ensure safe, high-quality patient care while following hospital policies, dialysis protocols, and infection control standards.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Monitor patients during hemodialysis treatments and promptly report changes to the RN.
  • Provide direct patient care under nursing supervision.
  • Respond appropriately during emergency situations.
  • Reinforce patient education and treatment instructions.
  • Document patient care, observations, flow sheets, incident reports, and other required records.
  • Carry out physician orders within the Product of practice.
  • Prepare, set up, disinfect, and maintain dialysis equipment.
  • Perform cannulation, blood draws, and dialysis machine setup.
  • Administer normal saline, heparin, xylocaine, and catheter locking solutions as ordered and under RN/Medical Director supervision.
  • Monitor and adjust dialysis treatment within the approved Product of practice.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and compliant work environment.
  • Adhere to HIPAA, infection prevention, and hospital safety policies.
  • Participate in continuous learning, quality improvement initiatives, and multidisciplinary team collaboration.
  • May be required to participate in on-call rotation for acute dialysis services.

Education:

  • High School Diploma required.
  • Associate’s Degree in science preferred.

Required Certifications & Licenses:

  • Current Certified Clinical Hemodialysis Technician (CCHT) certification.
  • BLS Certification.
  • Dialysis clinical technician certification required.
  • For newly employed patient care technicians, certification is required within 18 months of being hired as a dialysis patient care technician.
  • Dialysis clinical technician certification must be maintained in accordance with federal regulations and in accordance with the policies of the CMS approved national commercially available certification programs.
  • If a patient care technician who is not certified changes jobs from one dialysis facility to another, the time he/she was employed in the first facility will count toward the 18-month deadline for certification unless he/she had a gap in employment as a patient care technician of more than 18 months.

Experience:

  • Previous dialysis experience preferred.
  • Strong hemodialysis patient care experience.
  • Minimum 3 years of Hemodialysis Technician experience.
  • Experience with Fresenius 2008T dialysis machines.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Dialysis machine setup, operation, and disinfection.
  • Cannulation and vascular access management.
  • Blood specimen collection.
  • Medication administration within Product of practice.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Strong customer service and patient-centered care.
  • Knowledge of infection control and HIPAA regulations.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating with the healthcare team.
  • Ability to independently perform dialysis treatments and flip pods under RN supervision.
  • Must successfully complete Medication Calculation and Dialysis Competency exams during orientation.
  • Ability to distinguish colors accurately (Color Vision Test required).
  • Ability to respond to audible alarms.

Working Conditions:

  • Frequent standing and walking throughout the shift.
  • Ability to lift and transport patients using stretchers and wheelchairs.
  • Lift and carry dialysis solution containers.
  • Exposure to bloodborne pathogens and hazardous materials.
  • Frequent bending, reaching, and computer use.

Interview: 30–60 minute MS Teams Panel Interview.
