Job Description

Job Summary:

  • Under the direct supervision of the SPD Supervisor, performs and monitors sterile and non-sterile reprocessing of diagnostic, surgical, therapeutic, and patient-care utensils, supplies, instruments, devices, and equipment, performs case cart management and code cart restocking and maintenance, and is responsible for traction set-ups and takedowns.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Collects, properly handles, and makes appropriate disposition of contaminated items in accordance with established procedures.
  • Disassembles, rough washes, cleans, and dries utensils, instruments, devices, supplies, and equipment in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Inspects instruments for completeness and defective parts.
  • Arranges instrument kits for Operating Room and other department use according to Kardex specifications.
  • Maintains records for missing or defective instruments for the Operating Room.
  • Tests, monitors, and operates washing and sterilizing equipment including gas, hydrogen peroxide, and steam sterilizers.
  • Performs vacuum penetration and biological testing and interprets test results.
  • Maintains appropriate sterilization records and notifies the supervisor of abnormalities or malfunctions.
  • Determines appropriate sterilization methods and monitors recording charts during and after sterilization.
  • Prepares case carts for Operating Room, Delivery Room, and Cardiac Cath procedures.
  • Ensures appropriate supplies and records are maintained for each procedure.
  • Cleans, tests, and prepares portable patient care equipment for re-issue.
  • Restocks emergency and procedural carts and replaces expired products.
  • Assembles and disassembles traction equipment and maintains required records.
  • Maintains proper inventory levels for sets, packs, and trays.
  • Stores sterile and non-sterile items using a first-in, first-out basis.
  • Verifies sterility status prior to issue and reprocesses expired items.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned.

Required Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED.

Required Skills & Experience:

  • Six (6) to Nine (9) months of experience to be proficient in all phases of assigned duties or related field.
  • Ability to solve practical problems in situations with limited standardization.
  • Ability to interpret written, oral, diagrammatic, and schedule-based instructions.
  • Ability to exercise appropriate judgment in communications and actions with patients, physicians, associates, outside agencies, and vendors.
