Job Description

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • The position is responsible for assembling, cleaning, disinfecting, sterilizing and/or storing procedure trays, surgical trays and equipment.
  • Also assembles, distributes and/or delivers disposable and durable medical equipment, case carts and supplies to fill the needs of the Operating Room, Nursing Units, Ancillary Departments and client Clinics.
  • Operates and monitors sterilization equipment.
  • Disassembles carts and follows Universal Precautions for decontamination.
  • Sterilizes, disinfects durable medical equipment and instruments, packages clean supplies and instruments, maintains records for all instruments and transports sterilized items to the floor.
  • Assembles sterilized instruments and rechecks all instruments for cleanliness and/or impairment. Properly checks power equipment.
  • Takes measures to allow for easy instrument tracking including following labeling processes, use of engraver, reporting and documenting all missing instruments and implants replaced in trays.
  • Communicates the equipment and instrument inventory status with the Central Processing staff and Surgery Charge Nurse including order status, back orders and/or changes.
  • Responds to emergency situations by insuring all emergency, trauma and add-on cases are supplied properly and delivered to the Operating Room in a timely manner.
  • Utilizes applications and technology to accurately facilitate record keeping in accordance with State and Federal regulations.
  • Provides on the job training on the job training (OJT) to newly hired associates in the department.
  • Promotes mission, vision, and values of client Health, and abides by service behavior standards.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • May be required to work overtime based on business need.
  • May be required to float to other departments (within Product of competency and qualifications) based on business need.
  • May be required to be placed on-call during a regularly scheduled shift.

Education and Experience:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Previous experience in hospital or clinic operating room.

  • Experience and understanding in the use of computers, as well as the ability to learn software relevant to Sterile Processing.
  • Ability to successfully function in a fast-paced, service oriented environment.
  • Ability to work nights and/or weekends.
