Surgical Tech II

Job Description

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Provide surgical support to physicians and patients across surgical areas, including complex procedures.
• Anticipate surgeon needs and efficiently pass instruments, supplies, and equipment.
• Prepare surgical fields, instruments, supplies, and equipment for scheduled procedures.
• Perform surgical counts of sharps, instruments, sponges, and other items with the circulating nurse.
• Maintain aseptic technique and immediately address breaks in sterile technique.
• Handle specimens and medications according to policies and proper techniques.
• Ensure surgical equipment is properly functioning and report any issues.
• Assist with room turnover, cleaning, patient transportation, and other indirect patient-care activities.
• Assist with safe restraint of uncooperative or combative patients when required.
• Serve as a role model for Surgical Tech I staff.

Required Education:  

• Completion of an accredited program recognized by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting or a formal structure surgical program e.g., military service.

Required Certifications & Licensure:  

• Current American Heart Association AHA Certification for Basic Life Support BLS for Healthcare Providers.
• One of the following:
• Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA).
• Tech in Surgery – Certified (TS-C) from the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT).

Required Skills & Experience:

• Minimum 2 years of progressively responsible, directly related experience.
• Knowledge of surgical procedures, anatomy/physiology, safety procedures, and surgical instrumentation.
• Ability to anticipate surgeon needs and request appropriate instruments/supplies based on procedure and case progress.
• Strong critical-thinking, problem-solving, communication, and independent decision-making skills.
