Job Description
Job Summary:
- Fully competent, experienced dietitian who can cover all patient care units, including Critical Care (ICU and PICU).
- Provides comprehensive nutritional care to patients of all ages by assessing nutrition needs, developing, implementing, and re-evaluating care plans.
- Educates patients and family members, communicates patient issues to the healthcare team, modifies diet orders, and makes recommendations for enteral feeding modifications and nutrition supplements.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide comprehensive nutrition care by assessing nutritional needs and developing, implementing, and re-evaluating nutrition care plans.
- Modify diet orders as appropriate.
- Provide coverage for all inpatient units and assigned outpatient clinics.
- Participate in multidisciplinary rounds for designated outpatient clinics.
- Perform initial nutrition screenings and determine patient nutrition risk levels.
- Respond to nutrition-related referrals from clinicians, patients, families, and caregivers within established timeframes.
- Complete comprehensive nutrition assessments for moderate- and high-risk patients within established timelines.
- Complete nutrition assessments for low-risk patients according to established nutrition care policy.
- Calculate calorie, protein, and fluid requirements using standardized formulas.
- Recommend diet changes, enteral formulas, and nutrition supplements to physicians or nurse practitioners.
- Recommend nutrition support consultations when patients cannot meet nutritional needs through oral intake.
- Monitor patients’ nutrition status through meal rounds and calorie counts.
- Complete nutrition reassessments and follow-ups according to patient risk level and policy.
- Arrange enteral feeding services for outpatient or home care prior to discharge.
- Coordinate home delivery of nutritional supplements and complete required authorization and documentation for outpatient services.
- Refer patients to GI Nutrition Services, Social Services, Speech Therapy, Integrative Medicine, and other services as needed.
Education:
- Required: Bachelor’s Degree in Nutrition & Dietetics.
- Preferred: Master’s Degree.
Required Certifications & Licensure:
- Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) through the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR).
- Certified Dietitian Nutritionist within 12 months of employment (New York only; not required for New Jersey positions).
Required Skills & Experience:
- Two (2) to four (4) years of experience.
- Oncology experience.
- Experience providing comprehensive nutrition care across inpatient units, including ICU and PICU.
- Experience assessing nutrition needs, developing, implementing, and re-evaluating nutrition care plans.
- Experience with enteral nutrition support, nutrition supplements, and diet modifications.
- Proficient in English written and verbal communication.
- Strong verbal communication and listening skills.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
- Ability to build strong customer relationships.
- Demonstrated analytical, time management, prioritization, judgment, and decision-making skills.
- Seeks to acquire knowledge in area of specialty.
