Job Description

Job Summary:

  • Under the direction of the Nurse Manager and the Registered Nurse, serves as a member of the surgical team in the preparation for and execution of operative procedures.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Exercises surgical aseptic technique in preparation for and during surgery and adheres to all regulatory requirements including use of personal protective equipment.
  • Assists with preparation of the Operating Room in anticipation of specific surgical procedures including setting up the surgical suite with equipment, instruments, and supplies and requires moving large machines, lifting instrument trays weighing 25–30 lbs., and pushing carts.
  • Assists with preservation and labeling of operative specimens for laboratory analysis.
  • Assists with care, cleaning, storage, and inventory of supplies and equipment.
  • Maintains an orderly and clean work area and maintains appropriate stock levels.
  • Assists with transportation of preoperative patients to the Operating Room requiring the ability to push stretchers.
  • Assists with sterilization of instruments and equipment weighing 25–30 lbs. and movement or manipulation of large equipment.
  • Assists with positioning, skin preparation, and draping of patients requiring the ability to lift up to 35 lbs.
  • Anticipates surgeon needs and places appropriate instruments, sponges, sutures, and related materials immediately available for use during surgery.
  • Controls the location of contaminated instruments and supplies to prevent the spread of infection.
  • Performs surgical scrubs and shaves for assigned preoperative patients.
  • Labels medications and fluids transferred to the sterile field and delivers medication to the surgeon for administration.
  • Continuously strives to improve room turnovers by anticipating needs for upcoming cases.
  • Cares for Operating Room equipment by returning equipment to proper locations and assisting in removal of malfunctioning equipment with clear identification of malfunction.
  • Cares for instrumentation by protecting delicate instruments, identifying equipment requiring repair, removing it from service, and ensuring sub-sterile areas are clear at end of shift.
  • Performs accurate instrument, sponge, and needle counts.
  • Contributes to preference card updates and facilitates communication between surgeons and appropriate resources.
  • Prepares for Operating Room cases by assembling appropriate supplies completely and accurately and independently follows up on additional needs.
  • Independently researches procedures, equipment, and policies to maintain current practice.
  • Promptly signs off on staff meetings, communication book entries, policy changes, educational modules, and other required educational resources.
  • Confirms daily sterilizer quality assurance in the absence of an equipment technician.
  • Consistently assists other staff when not assigned to a case including maternal and newborn vital signs and care as directed.
  • Carefully disposes of sharps in appropriate containers before case counts leave the room.
  • Demonstrates respect for the dignity of patients, families, visitors, and coworkers to ensure a professional and courteous environment.
  • Recognizes and respects cultural diversity and communicates effectively with individuals of varying cultures, values, beliefs, and ages, utilizing interpreters when needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Completion of an approved Surgical Technologist program.

Required Certifications & Licensure:

  • Current Surgical Technologist certification from NBSTSA or NCCT.
  • BLS from AHA.

Required Skills & Experience:

  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables where limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Ability to exercise appropriate judgment in communications and actions with patients, physicians, associates, agencies, and vendors.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of strict aseptic technique.
  • Emotional stability and personal integrity.
  • Must be able to support OB Hemorrhage, C-hist and C-section cases.

Preferred Skills & Experience:

  • One (1) year of experience as a Surgical Technologist, may be a beginning practitioner.
