Job Description

Job Summary:

  • Performs laboratory procedures using established protocols with minimal technical supervision.
  • Responsible for specimen collection and processing, quality control, instrument maintenance, result verification, troubleshooting, corrective actions, and documentation.
  • Maintains compliance with laboratory standards while ensuring accurate and timely test results.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform laboratory testing according to approved procedures and protocols.
  • Collect and process specimens, including blood collection as needed.
  • Interpret, verify, and investigate abnormal or inconsistent results.
  • Perform and document quality control procedures.
  • Initiate corrective actions and document out-of-control situations.
  • Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory instrumentation.
  • Communicate instrument issues and discrepancies to leadership.
  • Document maintenance, troubleshooting, and corrective actions.
  • Participate in student and new employee training.
  • Assist in developing training curriculum and competency programs.
  • Complete competency assessments and continuing education requirements.
  • Investigate errors and support process improvement initiatives.
  • Utilize LIS, EMR, and laboratory systems appropriately.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, providers, peers, and leadership.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and compliant laboratory environment.

Required Education:

  • Associate Degree in Laboratory Science or Medical Laboratory Technology from an accredited institution, including laboratory internship.
  • Combined military laboratory training and experience meeting CLIA/CAP requirements.

Required Certifications & Licensure:

  • MLT (ASCP) or MLS (ASCP) Certification (or equivalent).
  • Certification eligibility meeting employer requirements if not currently certified.

Required Skills & Experience:

  • Laboratory procedures and testing.
  • Quality control (QC).
  • Specimen procurement and specimen processing.
  • Blood collection / Phlebotomy.
  • Test result interpretation and verification.
  • Instrument operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
  • Corrective action documentation.
  • Problem investigation and resolution.
  • Error detection and process improvement.
  • Effective verbal and written communication.
  • Customer service skills.

Preferred Skills & Experience:

  • 2+ years of clinical laboratory experience.
