Job Description

Job Summary:

  • Under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse and surgical team members, the Surgical Technologist is responsible for handling surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment during general surgical procedures.
  • This role requires knowledge of assigned procedures, anticipation of surgical team needs, and support of patient safety, comfort, and care.
  • The Surgical Technologist responds to emergent situations according to established procedures.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Scrub on general surgical procedures.
  • Prepare the operating room by setting up tables, instruments, and supplies based on procedure type.
  • Ensure proper functioning of instruments and equipment prior to use; report needed repairs.
  • Follow departmental policies, quality assurance programs, safety, environmental, and infection control standards.
  • Demonstrate cost-conscious handling and opening of sterile supplies.
  • Respond to emergent situations and notify appropriate personnel.
  • Deliver supplies to units and ancillary departments as needed.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and organized operating room environment.
  • Clean, stock, and return equipment and supplies to designated storage areas.
  • Provide comfort and support to pre-operative patients while respecting privacy.
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient and departmental information.
  • Assist the RN with admitting, transferring, and discharging patients from the OR.
  • Support leadership with supply par-level adjustments.
  • Participate in audits, task forces, continuing education, and department-specific training.
  • Support administrative and departmental governance changes.
  • Train and precept new Surgical Technologist staff as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education:

  • High school diploma or GED.

Preferred Education:

  • Graduate of a CAAHEP-accredited Surgical Technology program

Certification & Licensure:

  • Current BLS certification required (or must obtain within one month of start date).
  • CST certification not required.

Required Skills & Experience:

  • 1–2 years of Surgical Technologist experience.
  • Experience with joint procedures and/or robotic surgery.
  • Ability to lift and move patients.
  • Ability to push, pull, and lift case carts, instrument trays, and equipment.
  • Ability to work in a patient-care environment with potential exposure to communicable diseases and hazardous materials.
  • Ability to stand and walk for prolonged periods.

Preferred Skills & Experience:

  • One year or more of Surgical Technologist experience.
