Job Description

Job Summary:

  • Under the limited supervision of the Neurodiagnostic (ND) Tech Educator or delegated team member, prepares patients for a combination of routine Electroencephalography (EEG), Electromyography (EMG), long-term and intraoperative monitoring, evoked potentials, nerve conduction velocities, autonomic testing, Neuro Interventional Radiology WADA and Positron Emission Tomography (PET) including diagnostic and investigative studies in the laboratory, at the bedside, and in critical care units, on all ages of patients served by the department.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Prepares patients for routine and advanced neurodiagnostic procedures in laboratory, bedside, and critical care settings.
  • Accurately measures and applies electrodes according to the International 10–20 System and ensures impedances meet laboratory standards.
  • Documents comprehensive patient histories including seizure types, neurological symptoms, and medications.
  • Explains test procedures to patients and family members and recognizes medical contraindications of activation procedures.
  • Performs neurodiagnostic procedures according to laboratory standards under limited supervision.
  • Prepares testing supplies, exam rooms, and neurodiagnostic equipment per laboratory standards.
  • Adjusts controls and implements alternative methods to obtain optimal recordings, including artifact recognition and activation procedures.
  • Follows EMU Observer I standards of care and maintains quality EEG recordings.
  • Observes and begins training in EMG, EVP, Autonomics, Intraoperative Monitoring (IOM), WADA, and PET procedures.
  • Triages software errors, equipment malfunctions, and technical issues related to patient care.
  • Assists Tech I staff and completes documentation and charge entry accurately and timely.
  • Assists front desk with patient scheduling and check-in.
  • Reviews and clips EMU and continuous EEG files according to laboratory standards.
  • Performs charge capture and scheduling duties as assigned.
  • May be required to float to other sites to support department operations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education:

  • High school graduate or equivalent.

Preferred Education:

  • Graduate of an accredited Neurodiagnostic Technology program accredited by the Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation by the American Board of Registration of Electroencephalography & Evoked Potentials (ABRET).

Required Certifications & Licensure:

  • American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support for the Healthcare Provider (BLS) or an AHA approved equivalent required within 90 days of hire

Preferred Certifications & Licensure:

Registered by the American Board of Registration of Electroencephalographic and Evoked Potential Technologists (ABRET) in a minimum of one (1) of the following:

  • Registered Electroencephalography Technologist (EEG).
  • Registered Nerve Conduction Velocity Testing (EMG/NCV).
  • Certified Autonomic Professional (CAP).
  • Certified Long Term Monitoring Technologist (CLTM).
  • Registered Evoked Potential Technologist.

Required Skills & Experience:

  • Proven ability to perform Electroencephalography

Preferred Skills & Experience:

  • Two (2) or more years of proven experience as a Neurodiagnostic Technician.
  • Nerve Conduction Velocity Testing.
  • Autonomics.
  • Long Term Monitoring.
  • Evoked Potentials.
  • Magnetoencephalography.
