Job Description

Job Summary:

  • The Surgical Technologist II supports surgical teams by preparing operating rooms, maintaining sterile fields, and anticipating surgeon needs to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality surgical care across multiple specialties.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and set up the operating room based on patient age, surgical procedure, and surgeon preference cards.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of surgical pathology, patient allergies (including latex sensitivity), and required instruments, implants, prostheses, medications, and special equipment.
  • Anticipate surgeon needs during procedures and ensure supplies are opened or readily available in a cost-effective manner.
  • Maintain accurate counts of sponges, needles, and instruments per OR policy at all times.
  • Assist with proper care, labeling, and handling of surgical specimens.
  • Scrub, gown, and glove according to OR policies and recommended practices to support sterile technique and accurate counts.
  • Conduct instrument inventory counts when transferring items to decontamination to ensure no loss of equipment.
  • Inspect, clean, maintain, and properly utilize surgical instruments and equipment; report issues promptly.
  • Set up back tables, instruments, medications, and supplies specific to the surgical service.
  • Operate sterilizers correctly and verify sterilization parameters through printouts and documentation.
  • Open and close operating rooms in compliance with unit policies.
  • Participate in in-services and continuing education to maintain professional competency.

Education and Experience:

  • Minimum 3–5 years of scrubbing experience, including Obstetrics, Gynecology, Robotic surgery, Laparoscopic procedures, Open surgical cases.
  • Completion of an accredited Surgical Technologist education program, including Civilian programs or U.S. military surgical training (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, or U.S. Public Health Service).
  • At least 2 years of experience as a Surgical Technologist with exposure to two or more surgical specialties.

Certifications and Licenses:

  • National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA).
  • National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT).
  • Certified Surgical Technologist (CST).
