Job Description

Job Summary:

  • Performs Transthoracic echocardiograms and assists with Transesophageal and Stress Echocardiograms in accordance with standards set forth by the American Society of Echocardiography and the Client.
  • Demonstrates increasing competency in delivery of care to a primarily adult population.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrates proficiency performing routine and emergency echocardiograms including 2-dimensional, 3-dimensional, Doppler, and Transesophageal echocardiograms in accordance with standard practices.
  • Operates equipment necessary to perform procedures and obtain optimal images utilizing selected transducers, digital networking systems, and off-line analysis systems.
  • Recognizes basic cardiac pathology and analyzes patient medical records to obtain history and necessary information for diagnostic procedures.
  • Prepares preliminary reports for review and interpretation by Cardiologist, including comparison of previous studies.
  • Sets up for and assists with Transesophageal Echocardiograms; cleans and sterilizes TEE probes and performs probe leakage testing per department policy.
  • Performs routine cleaning, preventive maintenance, and reports equipment malfunctions; maintains clean and orderly patient care environment.
  • Participates in quality improvement activities and maintains appropriate logs, files, and records.
  • Prepares and instructs patients pre- and post-procedure and utilizes ultrasound contrast per ASE guidelines and department policy.

Required Education:

  • Completion of a two-year Allied Health degree.
  • Successful completion of a 12-month CAAHEP approved School of Ultrasound Technology.
  • Cardiovascular Technology.
  • Equivalent education.

Preferred Education:

  • Previous healthcare-related training such as CNA, EMT, PCA, or other is preferred.

Required Certifications & Licensure:

  • American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) for the Healthcare Provider or AHA-approved equivalent.
  • American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS).
  • Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) certification in cardiac ultrasound.
  • Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) from ARDMS within 12 months of start.
  • Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) from CCI within 12 months of start.

Required Skills & Experience:

  • One to three years’ experience as a cardiac sonographer is required.
