Job Description

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Clean, decontaminate, assemble, package, and sterilize surgical instruments and reusable supplies.
  • Coordinate and prepare supplies and instruments for emergent and routine surgical cases.
  • Assemble and wrap instrument sets.
  • Operate and ensure proper use of sonic cleaners and related equipment.
  • Retrieve and deliver surgical instruments in a timely manner.
  • Inspect instruments to ensure cleanliness and proper working condition prior to sterilization.
  • Decontaminate instruments using appropriate chemicals and procedures.
  • Test, operate, and load autoclaves.
  • Perform routine cleaning and decontamination of department work surfaces.
  • Complete sterilization log sheets accurately.
  • Monitor sterile inventory and remove expired or compromised items.
  • Re-sterilize compromised instrument sets.
  • Identify and report inventory or supply shortages.
  • Assist with training new staff as needed.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate case carts.
  • Pull required supplies and instruments for surgical cases.
  • Coordinate with operating room staff to ensure proper supply delivery.
  • Maintain optimal inventory levels of surgical supplies and equipment.
  • Follow FIFO (first in, first out) inventory control practices.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED.

License(s)/Certification(s)/Registration(s) Required:

  • Technician certification from either the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD) or from the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) as a Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) required.

Experience:

  • Minimum 6 months of related sterile processing experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of medical supply and equipment sterilization and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of sanitation, hygiene, and safety standards (steam and gas plasma sterilization).
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Basic record-keeping and computer skills.
  • Ability to read, spell, and perform simple math.
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and maintain professional relationships.
